That’s a record for us, as far as states go (we saw 6 provinces one time!).
The eight states we didn’t see were North & South Dakota (both somewhat rare on the East Coast), New Mexico (surprised we didn’t see it), Hawaii (long shot on the mainland 🤣), Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska and Iowa (surprised here too).
🗺️
",

With some people, I talked about the changes I’ve been going through and how happy I was. It wasn’t a drama session or looking for support, just sharing something about what I’ve been up to. People were just amazing.
But those weren’t the only good times. Just being accepted and talking like friends do when you get together. I wasn’t the trans person, I was just Dawn. I was just someone they knew for ages and we just sat around, talked, ate, drank, and simply did what human beings need to do, be social with each other.
Three nights in a row (pretty insane for an introvert like me) of social interactions, and they were all so great. 🩷 🏳️‍⚧️
",

At first I thought it was too slow, but the alternating points of view and the disintegration of everything really worked.
“Hard Times” was terrifying and amazing; dark, powerful and precise. Something out of America today with thugs & evil people running things. Also a frightening thought about potential future hiring practices/vetting procedures.
“Lydectes: On the Nature of Sport” was an interesting meta text that presages the type of rhetoric and realities of an America 50 years after it was written.
I didn’t really enjoy the other pieces.
",

I started working on this new collection, tentatively called Being, while I was in the process of publishing “Becoming”. I took a break for a bit, too much of life was demanding attention. But, it’s been flowing again and I’m happy about that.
Looking back on this exciting and at times scary transition, I’m still amazed at the wonderful people I’ve interacted with. I’ve gotten support from people I expected it from, and from people I didn’t expect it from. I’ve also gotten it from total strangers. That’s not to say that it’s all been peaches and cream, but overall, I’ve been extremely lucky. I can’t say how amazing it was and how wonderful I felt.
We had many wonderful encounters with people. One woman talked with us for a while about her own friend’s trans child and in the end, we all ended up hugging. It was so powerful. My heart was soaring. I was able to go shopping for jewelry, clothing, and shoes. And no real hassles or concerns, even from older and younger people. It just worked out. I was just a person at the beach, living her life and not bothering anyone. This is how the world can be and should be.
I did get some glances from a folks here and there, but only once was it bad, and I missed most of it as I was facing a different direction. But some privileged wannabe decided it would be fun to relive her high school bitch phase. She stopped right by our table and dramatically turned to her date and whispered and pointing at me. Probably because I had a killer set of red sandal heels and looked amazing both inside and out. My honey called her out in a nice way and she didn’t know how to respond to being called out and just left.
I won’t end on a downer. We saw old friends. Some knew about me, others didn’t. But, I got hugs and love and just was seen for who I am. I really needed that vacation and it came through for me. 🩷🏳️‍⚧️
p.s. OMG, packing was a pain in the tush. 4 pairs of shoes, multiple outfits, makeup, jewelry case, etc. But, I used everything. Important lesson for people of all genders, break in your shoes before doing 5 miles walks! Or, come prepared with band-aids I had some so I was good to go.

Trans Day of Visibility 2026
This is my second time celebrating, or perhaps, observing Trans Day of Visibility since I came out. Last year, only one other person knew besides me. This year, I am surrounded by such amazing friends who’ve accepted me for who I am.
In most cases, this wasn’t a big deal as I’m still who I always was. Some have gone out of their way to make it even more special. And there’s definitely some amazing people in medicine and in restaurants, who just treat me like a person (ref: my recent doctor and now dentist visits).
Today, I wore shorts for the welcome spring warmth, cute shoes, and my “Kindness is Free” shirt. I had my trans pride flag heart-shaped studs on as well as a dash of my favorite perfume (Lake & Skye 11 11 Vanilla). I felt on top of the world.
But, as much as I want to celebrate, I know how privileged it is for me to be able to be open. I’m in a trans friendly state, in a good neighborhood, and I can work from home so I’m not constantly on guard out in public. But I’ll never blend in or be confused for a cis woman. And I don’t want to. I am trans and that means so many things to me, as well as meaning so many possibly different things to my sisters, brothers, and family. I keep exploring it through writing, journaling, and exploring the boundaries out there.
I think those who are able to should stand up, and stand out, so that we are more seen. That we define ourselves, rather than be defined by those who use us to further their political careers. Or worse, those who hate us because their twisted cults tell them that their sons, daughters, spouses, friends or neighbors are evil because they can’t understand them or they threaten their power and control over their members.
Some can’t be safe if they’re visible, today or any day in many parts of the United States (and world, since along with our movies and tech, we’ve exported our hate). Some choose not to be visible for a myriad of reasons. As I can be visible and I want to be visible, I choose to be visible. To show, hopefully, that I’m just a person like they are, trying to get by, understand this world we live in, and find love and friendship. If one person opens their mind, that’s a win. And if no one does, so be it.
But, this isn’t enough. Standing up for an hour, a day, or a year, isn’t enough. Engage with your elected officials. Call or write them. Let them know they represent us too. Help out trans communities and friends: buy their books & zines. Support them staying alive and let them thrive, not barely survive. There are many ways and each of us has different ways of helping: cash, connections, knowledge, power. If you can help, you should help.
We have always been here and we always will be. 🩷 🏳️‍⚧️
",

Every now and then I would think 4 stars, but it just kept bubbling back to the top rating.
",

Or some nice rings on my hand to catch the light. Or putting my belt on in the opposite direction. There’s nothing powerful or life-changing in these little actions, but they mean so much to me personally. Just a little extra warmth, a little extra self-love, a little boost. It can also be so simply as accepting a compliment from someone instead of dismissing it. Or saying hello or even just waving to a stranger you cross paths with during your daily routine. Interact with your environment, get out of your head.
I think this applies to everyone. We all need these tiny indulgences for ourselves. We often deny ourselves the small things, for whatever reasons. But in this fast-paced world, especially in these current dangerous times, a moment of joy here and there can be a small, but strong light against the darkness.
",

But it made my whole day.
I was at the checkout at a Trader Joe’s, and the person ringing up my purchases said she loved the color of my purse. She said she loved how it looked with my jacket too. We chatted a bit while I bagged my items. She asked whether it rolled off my shoulder and we laughed about that. I told her I had a longer strap but when I carried my purse crossbody, it always gave me a pain in my neck, and she agreed. And then we said goodbye and wished each other a great day.
She didn’t need to say anything, but she did. And I felt more affirmed in public than I have in ages. I was a die-hard fan of Reminders, and I’ll keep it for managing location-based reminders being able to add pictures to items, and the general way that it’s linked up with every other stock app.
But I needed something to manage multiple projects in a nice, clean way. I like the “Area” organizational tool for grouping my home/misc stuff away from my writing and mutiple projects for each unique work I’m doing. Within that, each task is related to writing & publishing, and even some of those tasks have checklists that help further organize things that need to get done.
So, I guess I’ll be in a Hybrid mode for now.
Quick thought of the day that popped into my head while taking a walk this morning.
Is creating a solitary act or a group project? I was thinking about my poetry collection and getting it published. A traditional route for fiction writing is the writer creates, then finds an agent and works with them, and if it sells to a publishing house, they work with an editor there, etc. So the final novel is more of a group production rather than a solitary creation.
But, it made me think about photographers and painters. They don’t normally work with editors to constantly shape and mold their work. What you see is what you get (pun intended).
I’m not opposed to this process but just think it doesn’t have to be the only way. I also have seen the product and love books that have gone through this process. But, for me, I think I want to publish what I created, and let it stand on its own merits and failings.
",

We’ve got a long road ahead of us but we have always been here and we will always be here.
I have found that I have surrounded myself with so many wonderful people in my life. They have been accepting and supportive of me as I explore the world through awakened eyes. I have been lucky and I hope that I have been as supportive to them through their lives as well.
And I’ve found such a great home here, on Micro.blog. It’s such a great system and the community is wonderful. I’ve “met” some wonderful people and I can always find something to make me smile whenever I scroll through my timelines.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year! 🩷
",

I like having the time to form thoughts, massage the text, and think about how my words will be received.
Reading about the Danish government’s plan to end postal letter delivery at the end of 2025, I thought of how before email, I loved to send and receive (!) physical letters.
The thought that this joy will stop for some is heartbreaking to me. I can’t say how important it was to receive letters from a loved one or a pen pal as I was growing up. I would ride my bike to a favorite secluded place and read the letter, rapt.
I will strive to write physical letters to my friends in the future to keep this practice alive. I finally crossed that threshold and I’m super happy. It seems silly or trite, but little moments are sometimes the easiest to come by and the simplest to enjoy.
I did a bunch of online research for this. I’m a vanilla and musk kind of girl, but I hate stuff that’s overpowering (to myself and to others). I wanted something delicate, feminine, but something I could wear everyday or on a special night out.
Hello Lake & Skye’s 11 11 Vanilla! It is my new signature scent. It’s light and smells of fresh linen, some powder, a little musk, & hints of vanilla. I did one spray onto a wrist, touch the other and my neck pulse points. It was heavenly. I could smell it but it wasn’t overpowering at all. It was at peak scent for about 3 hours. After that it started to decline unless you were up close to where it was sprayed. By 6 hours, it was mostly gone.
This is an intimate scent, one for you and those closest to you. I think that’s really cool. Something for myself to enjoy or to share with a loved one. It’s not “in your face” for the whole world to share, even if they don’t want to share.
This was a nice indulgence for me during the winter season.
",

She said she’d heard about someone asking random people “if you could own any piece of art, what would it be and why?” I thought that was a great question and immediately one picture came to mind. It’s Picasso’s Head of a Woman, a small painting from 1924 that’s in the Tate Modern collection in London. I saw it in person while I was in town for a work visit. For several days, I was writing at the museum, and I’d go visit this painting each day. It drew me in and I wasn’t sure why.
My friend, who I recently came out to, asked if it resonated with me personally? I said I hadn’t thought about it at the time (this trip was over 10 years ago). But, I told her, thinking about it now, maybe I was drawn to it because I saw myself in it. Feminine, contemplative, somewhat abstract, a tad withdrawn? Saying this out loud to her was really powerful. It further illustrates how much of my true self was bubbling up under the surface. Even though I’d known for longer, I never connected this attraction to a painting with my inner self.
This is yet another reason why I love art, be it music, painting, writing, etc. It gets inside you. There are immediate reactions, but sometimes the delayed ones are even more profound.

I am a crazy person. I like minimalism and have tried to implement that through my home screen on my iPhone. I posted before about my home screen.
I always seem to be tinkering with it. My latest was to get down to one page of apps and some widgets on the Today view page. That lasted about 4 days. I just have too many apps that I like to open and I hate folders. I hate the extra clicking and for the apps I use, I actually like their icons. And, I absolutely hate seeing a notification on a folder for one of the apps (e.g. I use Overcast for podcast listening and I have the number of unplayed episodes on the app icon). Some apps I don’t use often, but I tell you, as soon as I moved them to the App Library only, I needed them multiple times a day! 🤣
So, I’m back to 2 pages of apps, and widgets on the Today View. In case you’re wondering, I’m using the double-wide Calendar widget (I love how it shows multiple days in a nice format), a double-wide Battery widget (to see watch, phone and AirPods). Then I have small widgets for Activity and Sleep Score.

Importance of knowing your community
I loved something I heard on a podcast this morning during my walk. It’s a great podcast (sadly it finished its run a few years ago) on trans writers, and the creator/interviewer themselves are trans. I’ve read so many of these folks that it’s wonderful to get to here their physical voices and listen to an interview. The podcast is called t4t, created by Hazel Jane Plante. By the way, Plante’s own works are amazing. Check out Little Blue Encyclopedia (for Vivian) and Any Other City. They’re worth it.
Anyway, back to the quote. The interviewee was Morgan M Page, a Canadian writer, artist, historian and activist. She was commenting on a conversation she had with trans youths in Toronto and how they knew who they were in the present but didn’t know that they had a history and could be artists, writers, etc. themselves since others had blazed a trail before them. She explained a lot of this history and their eyes widened.
Page said, “Once you reconnect someone to their lineage, they no longer feel like they are adrift and alone in an empty sea. And it just has such a powerful impact on people’s lives and what they think their lives could be.”
This. This is how I felt when I started reading trans writers and watching films written and directed by trans people. I saw this whole community unfurl before my eyes. I knew I wasn’t alone before I read/viewed these works, but still, to see it physically before me, I was blown away. It was like the sun coming out from behind a cloud, the warmth of a home after coming in from the snow, the embrace of a true love after a hard day.
This is also why I get so angry and fight so hard to keep books in libraries and in front of kids and adults. As I’ve said in my “About” page, never underestimate the power of seeing yourself positively portrayed in popular culture.
",

There were three stories and one poem that really stood up and spoke to me.
Lillian Boyd’s “The Repossession of Kevin’s Perfect Hair” was dark and awesome.
While I watched the various Hollywood incarnations of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (be they the original with Boris Karloff, the spoofs with Abbott & Costello, etc.), I didn’t read her actual novel until university. In a horror films class, of course. I remember not really enjoying the book, thinking that the movie was so much better.
Thankfully, I revisited the novel once I was older. By then, I knew more about her, her life, and the Romantic era. I love epistolary novels, but the beauty of this work is that there is no monster, only The Creature and its creator, Frankenstein. The Creature taught itself to read by finding three books, Milton’s Paradise Lose, Goethe’s Sorrows of Young Werther, and one volume of Plutarch’s Lives. Wow, talk about heavy hitting philosophical treatise on life and meaning. The novel is sewn through with thoughts on life, death, meaning of life, existence, love and being an outsider, shunned for who you are. This novel continues to resonate with me at each stage of my life and journey.
An interesting study on the novel was done by Charles Robinson, in his book “The Original Frankenstein”. He worked with an early draft held at the Bodleian Library. An amazing look at how the novel originally was structured. It flowed better and was a faster read. Worth checking out if you are interested in the history of this novel.

Happiest of birthday to these two writers today, August 28th.
First up is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (b. 1749). While often remembered today for his Faust (the first literary work I read in German), I was particularly drawn to his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. I’m enraptured by epistolary novels and a lover of the Romantic movement and its precedents. The beauty of the book was its story, so well told by a young writer. Even if I didn’t always like Werther as a person, I wanted to know what he thought and how his story unfolded.
Second, J. Sheridan Le Fanu (b. 1814), an Irish writer who is mostly known today for being the writer of Carmilla, an early Gothic vampire novella. I read that first but was more taken with the collection in which it was included, “In a Glass Darkly.” That work contained 3 short stories and 2 novellas. I loved “Green Tea”, “The Familiar”, “The Room in the Dragon Volant”, and “Carmilla”.
Coming out and revealing your truth to your friends and others is a complicated process. As I’ve posted before, sometimes you want to shout it from the rooftops, because you’re happy and confident and feel yourself, maybe for the first time, at least on a conscious level. But, other times you want to keep it low-key, and maybe tell people only if it comes up, or your presentation invites questions. Others might never ask and you might never see them, so no need to reach out to everyone you’ve ever known. I guess it comes down to how you feel and who you would like tell.
I feel like I should let my close friends know sooner, come out to them before they ask. That’s what friends do, they share with each other. I had a few friends that were top of my list. I’ve already mentioned one awhile back. I had another and I told them straight out. They were surprised but very accepting. I was close to telling another friend recently but that didn’t pan out since we were video chatting and they weren’t alone on their end. But, I’ll tell them when I can. I have friends who I trust and think will accept me who I’ll be seeing in the next few months, so I’ll be able to do it in person.
But, the important thing is you don’t have to force it. There’s no script or checklist you have to follow. Each person will figure out their own way of sharing their truth with others who matter to them. For me, it shouldn’t be like, “hey, long time no chat, btw, I’m trans.” I think it needs to organically come up, otherwise you’re likely to shock or unsettle the person you’re telling.
Kind of a long post without a ton of content, but sometimes it’s nice to write things down and share them in case others stumble across it and find something of value, even if it’s just someone else is thinking about the same stuff.

Finished reading: Whipping Girl by Julia Serano 📚
A powerful read that was at times depressing and demoralizing, but overall was uplifting, affirming, and empowering. Well worth the investment of time.
Three great quotes:
In a male-centered gender hierarchy, where it is assumed that men are better than women and that masculinity is superior to femininity, there is no greater perceived threat than the existence of trans women, who despite being born male and inheriting male privilege “choose” to be female instead. By embracing our own femaleness and femininity, we, in a sense, cast a shadow of doubt over the supposed supremacy of maleness and masculinity. (p. 15) There is no right way to be trans. Each of us simply needs to figure out what works best for us and what allows us to best express who we feel we are. (p. 28) It’s time we replace the existing gatekeeper model with one that’s centered on the needs of trans people themselves. This begins with the public acknowledgment that all people have the right to self-identify (even if that identity falls outside of the male/female binary), and that one’s self-identified gender is necessarily more legitimate than the one that is rather naively assigned to them by others. (p. 158) And finally, this thought really struck me. When asked by a friend what she found attractive in trans women, the author replied, “… it is almost always their eyes. When I look into them, I see both endless strength and inconsolable sadness. I see someone who has overcome humiliation and abuses that would flatten the average person. I see a woman who was made to feel shame for her desires and yet had the courage to pursue them anyway.” (p. 279)

Finished reading: In These Hallowed Halls: A Dark Academia anthology edited by Marie O’Regan & Paul Kane 📚
Probably the best piece in the collection was Tori Bovalino’s “Phobos”. Wow, excellent writing, dark as fuck, character development, cool idea. Wow.
I got this book primarily to read M.L. Rio’s short story. I loved her book If We Were Villians. I read her novella Graveyard Shift and liked it a lot as well. But, and I never say this, Graveyard Shift needed to be longer to more fully develop the story. Rio’s short story here, “Weekend at Berties”, falls into that same trap. It’s good writing but it was too quick and not enough development. I despise tomes, but this needed a little more space.
In that same vein, I think “Four Funerals” by David Bell needed a bit more space to develop. Not much, maybe 10-20 more pages? Still, a great idea and nice writing.
Kelly Andrew’s “The Hare and the Hound” was great writing, although I’m not much into the fantastical. I still enjoyed it. I also liked the story telling in “The Professor of Ontography”, by Helen Grant. A little kooky at the end but up to there it was a good read.

My iPhone Home Screen
Last night, I saw @manton’s post re: Swarm changing their app icon. He included his iPhone home screen. It reminded me of when I first got an iPhone and my friends and I would share our home screens to see what apps everyone thought were important enough to keep on their main screen. Manton said that he also likes looking at other folks screens, so I’m posting mine with some explanations. This is a long post, but I’ve seen so many other bloggers do stuff like this and it’s how I’ve discovered some fun apps.
I must admit that I change my home page often. Sometimes it’s a new app or interest. My big thing is adding widgets, then lamenting the fact that even a small one takes up the space for 4 apps. Currently, I have two and I use them daily.
I have some more widgets that are on the Today view (slide right). If I put them on my home screen, I would only be able to fit 4 apps plus what is on the Dock! For those interested, the widgets in my Today view are a medium battery (so I can see percentages), a small Book Tracker status, a small Fitness, and a small Weather. I don’t need Weather on my home page since it’s on my lock screen.
My Widgets Things 3: I am a to do person, and I go back and forth between Reminders and Things. Things is more slick, though I like some of the integration that the stock Reminders app provides. I am always adding to dos using Siri (“Remind me today …"). Doing it with Things had a few extra steps and it was clunky. But, I found a neat feature: I have Things import new todos from a particular list in Reminders. I created a Reminders list called “Things3”. Then I set up Things to show that list in my Things Inbox. I can then import them and voila. Pinterest: I love Pinterest for saving ideas and images. I collected my favorite ones into one folder and have the widget display a rotating selection from there. I like having something besides apps and to dos staring back at me when I open my phone. My Dock Calendar: I love having the date display and I do use Apple’s stock app. Fantastical is nice, but overkill for my needs. I loved Calendar 5, but that’s been replaced with just Calendars and it too is more than I actually need. Calendar 366+ is pretty nice, especially with the “Agenda” view (reminds me of my Week-at-a-Glance planners from college!). But, Cal 366 was having some bugs with the display so I keep it in the App Drawer in case I need it. Why would I need it? Apple’s stock app on the iPhone only allows 2 alarms to be set for an event. Sometimes I have 3 alarms (a week in advance, to plan, that morning, and then an hour before). I can enter those on the Mac app but not the iPhone app. Cal366 lets me add infinite number of alarms right there. So, I keep it around for now. Safari: I keep trying to move this off the dock, but I do need access to the web more often than not. So, it stays Mail: I like Apple’s stock mail app and I’m still a big email user. Messages: I text with friends and family everyday, so I need this. My Apps Overcast: I love this app. Clean, simple, fast, great audio clarity even at higher playback speeds, nice organization. Plus, I really like seeing how many episodes I have as an app badge. I really wanted to use Apple’s Podcasts app, but it just took too many clicks to get to my podcasts, it kept going back to the home page instead of staying in my show lists, it showed me early-access pay episodes always (no way to turn that off). I do still look at Apple’s podcast app from time to time since their discovery of new shows is pretty nice, but I listen to enough podcasts or read enough RSS feeds to get new recommendations from them instead of an app. Music: I pay for Apple Music and really like it. On walks, I listen to podcasts, but when I’m out and about, or even when I’m at home, I use the Music app all the time OurGroceries: I bought this ages ago and the app continues to shine and be updated. I have multiple lists (specific stores, general warehouse stores, etc.). I like how it keeps a history of previous items (how many is a setting) so I can just type a letter or two and see from my previous items. Even better, if you manually sort your lists, it remembers the ordering. This is indispensable if you ambulate a grocery store the same way. Photos: I’ve organized my photos and I’m always looking things up in there, so it deserves a front page slot. Book Tracker: I just started using this app in the last few months. I had to buy it once for iOS/iPadOS and once for macOS, but it is worth it. It’s like what Goodreads could be if Amazon threw some of their gabillions of dollars at it. Plus, it’s private and I’m not providing data to some huge company that will target ads that follow me night and day. It also has great statistics for current and former years, ability to add your own notes, own pictures, etc. A really slick app, worth checking out. GoodLinks: If I read everything that I wanted to when scrolling through news, BlueSky, my RSS feeds, etc., I’d never get anything done. So, I need a read it later service. In the past, I used Instapaper, Pocket, and Apple’s Reading List. But GoodLinks just works better. It has tags like Pocket had, it allows highlights, it syncs through iCloud and is integrated throughout the Apple ecosystem via Share sheets. It was a one-time purchase, but now they’ve added a subscription model. It’s unique, though, in that whatever features they add while your under subscription, you get to keep even if you let the subscription lapse. I had it pre-subscription, but pay for the subscription for new features and helping out an indie developer. News: I also subscribe to Apple News+, so I keep it on my front page. This app has moved back and forth over the years, since I mostly read News on my iPad. But, it’s nice to have there. And, my saved stories sync across devices so it makes sense to sit next to GoodLinks. News Explorer: I’ve been an RSS junkie for years. I’ve tried both free and pay (NetNewsWire, Reeder through its various incarnations, feeeed, Unread, and many more that I sometimes trialed and ditched). News Explorer was really slick, then it seemed like abandon-ware. I reached out to the developer and they responded quickly about a major update coming. It was indeed major and I love this app. I can do feeds from regular RSS, youtube, reddit, Mastadon, and BlueSky. It can search for feeds too. There are a tons of configuration options that were overwhelming when I started using this app years ago, but I’ve figured them out. If you like RSS, you should check this out. Btw, I really wanted to like Reeder. It seemed like it was abandoned too, then it came back and what it’s morphed into isn’t what it used to be and it doesn’t meet my needs. Alas. Journal: I couldn’t wait for this app to be released, then I was so disappointed. So few features (like they rushed it out the door), clunky, etc. So, I kept using Day One. But, the next major release fixed so many issues and now I use it several times a week. I didn’t mind that it only worked on iPhone since I use my phone a lot. But, I am excited that in the newest OS releases, it’ll be across the Apple ecosystem. Notes: I love notes almost as much as I like to dos. 😊 Apple’s app just works. I don’t need crazy stuff but I like to organize my notes into folders (and folders within folders). I like the views they offer, I like that it syncs across all my devices, pretty consistently and pretty quickly. One thing it desperately needed was an interface on Apple Watch, and it appears it’s coming! I know it might be a bit clunky on the watch, but it’s nice to not have to pull my phone out of my purse if I’m checking a recipe or some notes when meeting someone. MultiTab for Tumblr: I’ve been with tumblr for ages. I used their free app for a long time, and even did a year with the ad-free paid version. But, the price doubled this year, and it’s not worth $70 to use their app. I pay $5.99/year for MultiTab. It has a nice interface, has none of the tumblr ads and fluff, and just works. I follow mostly nostalgia type stuff (movies, books, art, fashion, etc.). If they had a widget, I’d use it in place of the Pinterest one. The only thing I miss from the default Tumblr app echoes what I said about Overcast vs. Apple Podcasts: recommendations. Sometimes, when scrolling through the official app, I’ll get a “based on your likes” and maybe 10% of the time, I’m like, Cool, I’ll check it out. You don’t get that via MultiTab nor do you get access to messaging, etc. But, it’s still a great app. BlueSky: As soon as South African Hitler, aka Musk, took over Twitter, I deleted my account. I tried Mastodon but it wasn’t quite working at top speed when I was using it. BlueSky, when it was opened to all, was something I wanted to try. I really like it and have a real sense of community there. The app just keeps getting better. I hope it lasts. Epilogue: Since I didn’t want to give freebies to Amazon, but I still wanted to share some social info about my book reading, I was super happy to find this app. It’s easy to use and it populates pages I’ve set up on this blog (see Books link at top). Believe me when I say a good compliment for an app is that it just works. Epilogue just works. Micro.blog: Duh. 😊 I love micro.blog: the app, the concept, the developers, the community. I’m really happy to be here. Ok, this was originally just going to be a reply to Manton with my home screen. If you made it to the end, congrats and I hope it was entertaining or informational. Take care!

Finished reading: After Realism edited by André Forget 📚
A really fun read of short stories by Canadian authors. Some were experimental, some long, some short, some really out there. It was a fun few days as I worked through them.
My favorites were:
Carleigh Baker’s “Baby Boomer”: wow, short and powerful Tom Thor Buchanan’s “Jamaica”: another great story. So many loose threads that didn’t impact the story one iota. Camilla Grudova’s “Madame Flora’s”: wow, weird but interesting Casey Plett’s “Portland, Oregon”: there is no reading joy more perfect that a Casey Plett short story! I love her writing. I knew I’d read this before, it was in her debut collection, A Safe Girl to Love. David Hubert’s “Chemical Valley”: fucking dark. Good writing. Michael Lapointe’s “The Stunt”: powerful and very dark. Sadly true. I also thought the following were good:
Ryan Avanzado’s “Tita Esme’s Room”: pretty good. Probably needed more space at the end to flesh story out. But pretty good. Paola Ferrante’s “Underside of a Wing”: good read, nice running repetition of the word albatross and its meaning to the author) Sofia Mostaghimi’s “Roxane and Julieta” Cason Sharpe’s “California Underwater”: good quick slice of life, nicely written too. John Elizabeth Stintzi has a piece in here. It wasn’t one of my favorites in this collection, but please check out their novel Vanishing Monuments or their poetry collection, Junebat. Those are heart-shatteringly beautiful.
",

My finger hovered over the send button for like five minutes, constantly re-editing and thinking how I wanted to say it. But, it came out beautifully (I think) and the response was immediate and positive. I didn’t expect it to be different, I’ve known them forever, but it was validating, heartwarming, and a welcome moment on this long journey. We then talked on the phone right away for a long time. It was so good to here their voice and say out loud what had been in my heart for so long. They were at the top of the list for who I wanted to tell.
P.S. Having referenced Charlotte Brontë, I do have to say that she’s my least favorite of the Brontë sisters. Anne is tops for me (Tenant of Wildfell Hall is one of my favorite books of all time). Emily is next up. Was there ever a darker piece of literature than Wuthering Heights?

It’s both exciting and sad that I’ve discovered so many things now that I’m older that I never knew about when I was younger. This isn’t about being trans, that’s something I’ve known since I was in single digit years. No, this is about an author.
This is about finding authors who were alive and writing when I was devouring a genre but never heard of them. I was at the library all the time, constantly checking out sci-fi books to read. I also spent every last cent I earned or was gifted for birthdays/holidays at my local bookshop. Books were my candy growing up.
This particular author is Kate Wilhelm. She was writing short stories and novels since the 1960s, especially in the New Wave movement of the late 60s and early 70s. Her writing is amazing, beautiful prose & psychologically-based stories. I love her atmospheres (no SF pun intended) & the inner lives of her characters. Three of my favorites books of hers were The Abyss (two novellas), Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang (1977 Hugo Award for best novel) and Somerset Dreams and Other Fictions (collection of short stories and novellas).
She died in 2018. I read my first of her books in 2020. I could have been a fan. I could have seen her at a convention or a book signing. I could have told her how much she impacted me (both as a reader and a writer (her craft can teach a great deal)).
Why didn’t I know about her? Maybe because she was a woman in a pretty male-dominated genre, especially at her peak? But, she outclassed so many of them. Maybe because I didn’t look hard enough? I’m not sure, but I try to sample so many more authors today so that I don’t miss out on someone amazing who I might be able to have a connection while we’re both still walking around.
Just my 2¢ on an idea that popped into my head at 4:14 am this morning.
",

This wasn’t something invented a few years ago by people that Republicans and related fascists hate. And gender fluidity goes back millennia, back to the beginning of recorded history and literature.
One thing that blew my mind in this review from LitHub, is that the infamous Nazi book burning pictures we have are of Nazis burning his books from his Institute for Sexual Science, a think tank and surgical center in the 1910s and 1920s. Hitler and his Nazis burned and tried to erase his research, but it has lived on. I’ve feel a visceral connection with the artists and their words. I sometimes find words or emotions to explain or flesh out my own experiences.
When I finished reading, I thought abuot how to rate it. It’s weird that this book made me rethink how I like to rate items. I usually use a ranked system, 1-5, with 5 being the best. But, it doesn’t seem fair to rate poetry on a scale like that. It either grabs you or it doesn’t. And if it grabs you, I think it changes you, on some level.
That is why I always return to poetry, I think. There’s something about it that lets you think more deeply. There’s a thread, there’s scaffolding or superstructure, but you bring more of yourself to a poem since you need to provide the details. So, for poetry, I think I need to confined myself to “moved” or “unmoved”. This collection is a moved, without a doubt.
P.S. Ok, I’d give it a 5/5 if I had to but that’s just me wanting to make sure people know this is a great work, and if the poet ever ran across it, she would know that she made a difference to me. Thank you.

I’ve been doing both a bunch lately and I keep blurring the lines between something that could be inner-inner monologue vs inner-outer monologue. I think a blog like this needs to have more content that probes deeper than surface level, both for me developing as Dawn as well as others who (hopefully) stumble across my scribbles. For me, I get to explore and experience myself. For others, they get to see me for who I am as well as maybe see a bit of themselves.
That was the hardest part growing up, not being able to see other people like me, except maybe in a film or a book where they were portrayed as a monster, a scapegoat, or just a splash of non-cishet life that could be exploited for a laugh or a jump-scare.
I hope I’ll have more content soon that will explore these feelings. I’m figuring it out myself too as I go. I hope you enjoy the journal too.

The last few years, I’ve been on a kick of Canadian authors. I didn’t just wake up and say, hey, let’s read some Canadians, even though there’s no reason you shouldn’t. But, I noticed after a while, some of my favorite reads since 2020 were by these amazing Canadians listed below. Many of them may have other books and my list is just to give you one per author. If you find you like them, check out other books they may have written.
(The ordering is simply alphabetical.)
Lisa Alward: Cocktail (2023): Alward nails each short story, never overdoing or undercooking her stories.
Mona Awad: Bunny (2019): Oh my god, this is so beautifully twisted! I loved it and thought it was kind of like “The Craft” meets “The Secret History” meets “Heathers.”
Gwen Benaway: Day/Break (2020): a short, beautiful collection of poetry.
Hazel Jane Plante: Little Blue Encyclopedia (for Vivian) (2019): A powerful story told in an unusual and unique way.
Casey Plett: A Dream of a Woman (2021): You can never go wrong with anything Casey writes, but I truly loved this collection.
John Elizabeth Stintz: Vanishing Monuments (2020): a beautiful & sad look at aging, dementia, and becoming and unbecoming.
Natalie Zina Walschots: Hench (2020): another fun romp, reminscient of the Boys without all the horrendous violence.
Deborah Willis: Girlfriend on Mars (2023): This sounded like it might be too cool for school when I picked it up, but I really loved it.
Jia Qing Wilson-Yang: Small Beauty (2016): A story that slowly builds while weaving something beautiful. A quick read that will leave a long impact on your heart and mind.

Carnage for Christmas by Alice Maio Mackay
I finally was able to finish watching the most recent movie (of five) from Alice Maio Mackay that’s streaming on Shudder (and AMC+). It’s another amazing flick. If you haven’t seen this film, or any of her films, stop reading and start streaming. It’s horror, it’s art, it’s trans, it’s queer, it’s love, it’s representation.
Alice and co-writer Ben Pahl Robinson really know how to write dialogue and group scenes. I just love these in all her films. The dialogue is not stilted, preachy or expository. It feels real, almost like you’re a part of the group or sitting at the table next to them. Also, they write (and the actors emote) beautiful relationships. These aren’t two (or more) actors who play a couple or close friends. It seems like they found a couple and cast them in their film.
Speaking of the actors, I love that she has a core that she uses in all her films. It’s great seeing them come back, in similar or opposite roles. And then there’s always a new face or two that she brings in that just rock. Where does she find them?!? Just great acting by everyone.
And last, like everyone else, I have to mention the colors. The lighting and the clothes just stand out and grab you. Lola’s makeup when she’s standing down the two rednecks in the street near the end is awesome! I had to stop it and just look at a few frames. Attention to detail that works in a still as well as motion.
All of her films have touched me deeply. I see myself in these films. The words speak to my heart and mind. I wish these had been out when I was younger but they mean the world to me now.
",

The acting was amazing, the film was beautifully shot, the themes were both joyous and heart-rendering. She really knows how to write and direct a film.
And the cast has shown up again, bringing such depth. Lisa Fanto was fantastic. Her joy, her despair, her just being on the screen was something I’d expect from a much older, more experienced actor. She just nailed it. Iris Mcerlean, who played Dario, was superb. They had superb chemistry with Fanto and demonstrated that they belonged in this film.
This flick is even better than Mackey’s first major film, So Vam. That was a fun movie but the depth she added in so little time between releases is just mind-blowing. She was 18 when Bad Girl Boogey came out. WTF! She has three films after this one, I’ve seen two of them and they just keep getting better.
Films you should watch of hers, listed in order they came out.
So Vam (fun) Bad Girl Boogey (emotional and excellent) T Blockers (my fav, I feel it was made for me) Satranic Panic (my second fav, just amazing) Carnage for Christmas (in my queue) ",

I wasn’t X or Y (unintentional but apropos pun), I could be whoever I wanted to be.
When I got older, I felt pressured to conform to norms and I pushed my true self beneath the surface. I could see it, I could feel it but I couldn’t share it. I never saw my true self in popular culture (e.g. in movies, books and television).
I began to wonder if there was something wrong with me. When I got even older, I saw how others sought to represent my inner self. It was fetishized, ostracized, othered, and attacked. I was too afraid to express myself. I even bought into some of this stereotype, making myself happy for a moment and then being disgusted the next, since it was wrong.
But, it wasn’t wrong.
Now, emboldened, I’m taking steps. Some small, some a little larger. Even though there is such despair right now for trans people, with such hatred and vitriol thrown at them for no reason than to find a target to focus hatred and empower fascists, there is hope. They have erased us from websites, removed us from care, are even now considering removing suicide prevention care (so much for all that pro-life rhetoric), and they are aiming their supporters at us for mental and physical harm. We have survived for milenia (yes, check it out), and we will still be here when their ideas are consigned to the landfill of hate.
",

It’s amazing how a little thing can cause such joy, or gender euphoria. These little things are so important to me now, and so special.
One thing I love is my new trans pride flag earrings. Wearing it just lights up my day. I’ve worn an earring for years, and it was just like putting on a watch. I did it in the morning, took it off at night. With this earring, though, I just get a skip in my heart and a warm feeling in my body. It’s affirming who I am and what is important to me.
I even had someone I just met say, “I like your earring”. The way she said it and looked at me, I’m almost 100% certain she understood its meaning and she supported me. That didn’t scare me, it affirmed me and made me feel just a tad more special.
Another thing I started doing was changing the lock screen on my phone. I’m not usually one for busy screens, preferring simple shapes or a low-res image. But, I was playing around and found out about using emojis and was able to blend a pink heart, the trans pride flag and an emoji of a woman raising her hand. Check it out).
It’s so great to hear a strong voice calling out bigotry and privilege, that still rocks. Each time I hear it, my heart soars.
",

So, here’s a quick rundown of my thoughts.
Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata (translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori): 5 stars. Simply a joy to read. Beautiful writing, beautiful ideas. Superb. No hesitation or doubt that this was a five-star read.
Gliff by Ali Smith: 4 stars.
Skinship by James Reich: 4 stars. It was a very fast read, so nicely done with writing craft, which made it flow so smoothly. I’m a sucker for a generation ship novel.
Aurora Floyd by Mary Elizabeth Braddon: 4 stars. Not quite as good as Lady Audley’s Secret, but still a great romp of a novel. Braddon’s writing style simply compels you to keep reading, even if the situation feels incredulous!
The Clone by Theodore L. Thomas & Kate Wilhelm: 1 star
Girlmode by Magdalene Visaggio/Paulina Ganucheau (illustrator): 4 stars
Banal Nightmare by Halle Butler: 2 stars.
How the World Made the West: A 4,000 Year History by Josephine Quinn: 4 stars.
Lifeboat by James White: 3 stars.

I read The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Bettany Hughes in 2025 and gave it 3 stars
A good read that I picked up at one of my favorite local shops. This book, while packed with information, would probably have been better as a long-form journal/magazine piece rather than a book. It felt like reading a Wikipedia article, where you keep clicking to go deeper and deeper down different rabbit holes. There was a lack of cohesion in each section, more of a well-researched data dump rather than a contained piece.
Having said that, my favorite chapter was on the Mausoleum of Halikarnossos. I think it was partly due to her citing various sources that I have always enjoyed and have copies of, such as Homer’s Iliad, Aulus Gellius’s Attic Nights and Herodotus’ Histories.

I read Listen Listen by Kate Wilhelm earlier this year and gave it 3 stars.
After having finished “The Clone” which Theodore L. Thomas co-wrote with Kate Wilhelm, I was getting worried. Wilhelm is a fantastic writer, who brings depth & psychological to her work. “The Clone” from 1965 was simply awful. I think Wilhelm hit her stride in the late 1960s/early 1970s and that’s where some of her favorite works of mine can be found, like The Abyss, The Downstairs Room, The Killer Thing, The Infinity Box, Margaret & I, Somerset Dreams and Other Fictions, The Clewiston Test, and, of course, Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang.
This new book, “Listen, Listen” was better than The Clone, but not her best work. Still, a good book by Wilhelm is worth more than a great book by a lesser craftswoman. It contains three novellas, one novellete, and a speech she gave on writing science fiction.
The first novella, “The Winter Beach” (1981), is the Kate Wilhelm I know and love. A hint of science fiction but an abundance of psychology, philosophy and simply beautiful writing. “Julian” (1978) is a shorter novellete that’s a great story for the most part, even with its weird ending. Still, wonderful craft at work.
The novella from 1981, “With Thimbles, with Forks, and Hope”, didn’t do anything for me. I didn’t enjoy it and ended up skimming it. I think the next novella, “Moongate” from 1978, was even worse.
The concluding essay “The Uncertain Edge of Reality” from a talk she gave at a convention in 1980, was good. Nothing spectacular like Joanna Russ’s essay collection “To Write Like a Woman: Essays in Feminism and Science Fiction” from 1995, but still an interesting read.
",
